Jim Ewers fashions his place as a bit of Italy in Illinois - a
newly built winery that resembles a 400-year-old Tuscan villa, tucked
among rolling hills and vistas near a lush national forest.
From his vantage point at the Blue Sky Vineyard in southern
Illinois, Ewers sees great opportunity in the state's agricultural
landscape and he is unconvinced that adding another winery to
Illinois' growing collection will squeeze the market.
"We have not reached critical mass in terms of wineries," Ewers
said from the winery, about 15 miles southeast of Carbondale. "The
general thought is that we're not taking another slice of the pie -
we're helping grow the pie."
