Article: Characters, writing overcome confusing start; 'Serenity' mixes factors from 'Star Wars' and 'Indiana Jones'

Early on in the film "Serenity," I became confused and a bit apathetic.I tried to pay attention, but the one-liners and explanations for a world hundreds of years into the future went by as fast as many of the spaceships.

Eventually, though, I caught up and enjoyed the funny characters and witty writing. I guess it was worth the matinee price.

"Serenity" is a film based on the 2002 Fox television show "Firefly" that lasted only 15 episodes - shown out of order. Its creator Joss Whedon wasn't discouraged and perhaps rejuvenated by high DVD sales.

So, the director who also created "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" brought his science fiction/western to the big screen, borrowing from many past ...
