The famous before and after photographs of rocky beaches in
Prince William Sound-initially black with oil spilled from the tanker
Exxon Valdez and later scrubbed clean by Exxon workers-had been seen
by dozens of Alaska reporters. Proudly distributed by Exxon
publicists, they had become a familiar part of the debate here about
oil and the environment and caused little excitement.
Then the Anchorage Times published some of the photographs in
February, and ordinary press agentry suddenly became mild sensation.
The Times, undergoing a transition rare in modern American
journalism, did not label the photos as Exxon products, raising
questions about the paper's new managers and its commitment ...
