Article: Governor to sign end to automatic gas-tax increase; Doyle says registration fees might have to rise to fund the state's road system

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Gov. Jim Doyle pledged Monday to sign legislation repealing Wisconsin's automatic, annual increase in the gas tax to give consumers a break - but said lawmakers might have to jack up registration fees to ensure adequate funding for the state's road system.

The Legislature approved a bill this month to end the annual indexing for inflation in 2007. It also would move up by one month to April 1 a planned penny cut in the portion of the tax that helps cover the costs of environmental cleanup projects.
