Article: Tragedy puts sports, parenthood in perspective; Tony Dungy's qualities transcend pro football

Anyone who has ever tackled parenthood likely felt a cold chill Thursday when word came that Tony Dungy's son died from an apparent suicide.

Knowing what kind of man Tony Dungy is makes it even tougher to grasp.

I had the rare opportunity to interview the Indianapolis Colts coach one-on-one back in the days when he was head coach at Tampa Bay. It was 1999, and he made a summer visit to southern Illinois for a Fellowship of Christian Athletes banquet.

Never, in 20 years of sports writing, has someone so high up on the NFL ladder impressed me so much with his kindness and sincerity.
