Dear Lydia: Kennel cough is a complex disease that can be caused by one or more types of bacteria and one or more types of viruses.

Your dog picked up these "disease causers" from another dog or a surface that was contaminated by another dog. The "bugs" (viruses and/ or bacteria) move in and decrease the effectiveness of your dogs' respiratory immune system. After that happens, it is only a matter of time before symptoms set in, usually a bothersome hacking cough.
