Cutbacks in federal spending, while perhaps not the ultimate
test of the Washington economy's strength, provide further proof that
the source of the region's fortunes has matured.
For the past two years, the federal government has curbed
spending for goods and services in the area and there has been barely
a ripple in the local economy as a result. At least no one has yet
come up with evidence to support the claim that a drop in federal
spending has severely hurt the region.
It's a given that federal procurement is an important factor in
the local economy. Yet the cutbacks don't seem to be having the
