Article: Legislature might cork wineries; Illinois vintners face pressure from beer group

GALENA, Ill. - Dark bottles of wine line the wall behind a wooden bar at Galena Cellars Winery. Glasses stand upside-down in glistening rows alongside uncorked bottles that have already been sampled in the tasting room.

The Lawlor family has worked to produce and sell locally made wine for more than 20 years in Galena. Tourists from across the country stop to learn about the business, browse the gift shop and taste some of the 40 varieties of wine offered.

But as two opposing pieces of legislation concerning wine-making in Illinois wait on the House floor for consideration, the Lawlors are aware that the way they sell to tourists, as well as the locals, could soon change.
