Those who knew Dubuque County Attorney Fred McCaw in the courtroom speak of his fairness and his integrity. The ones who worked alongside the long-serving prosecutor could attest to his ready council, guidance and open-door policy.

So it was perhaps a fitting but sad symbol to find McCaw's office door shut with a deputy standing guard Thurs-day - reminding all who approached that Dubuque County's top prosecutor was gone for good.

McCaw died of an apparent heart attack late Wednesday while he was bicycling on vacation in South Dakota. He was 60.
