Article: Older city areas eligible for tax breaks; Single-family homes, duplexes and apartment buildings in some older neighborhoods qualify for the program

Property owners in Dubuque's older neighborhoods can get a tax break for improving their homes, but they have to apply soon.

Aggie Tauke, city community development specialist, said it's part of the Dubuque Urban Revitalization program. It allows people living in specific areas to get a 10-year tax break on significant improvements to their property during 2006.

"It's nothing to do with maintenance. It would be for adding an addition or other significant improvement," she said.

Property owners must apply for the exemption by Feb. 1.
