In response to Frank Potter's letter (July 18) regarding the
practice of failing a student in a course who commits an act of
academic dishonesty: Mr. Potter writes, "Only subject matter
competence and not nonacademic factors of attendance, participation,
moral behavior, or deficits in organization skills, should be
graded."
As a college professor, I believe Mr. Potter underestimates the
missions of colleges and universities. Indeed, college professors not
only aspire to fill minds with information, but also hope to
transform young adults into responsible, mature thinkers.
