LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The deepest Kentucky Derby in recent memory
turned into a rout by a horse whose grandsire was named after Roberto
Clemente.
Barbaro, an undefeated bay colt bred and owned by a couple from
eastern Pennsylvania, cruised to a 6 1/2-length victory in the most
lopsided Derby in 60 years.
"What can I say," said Barbaro trainer Michael Matz, another
Pennsylvania native. "Everyone saw it. They know what he did."
Barbaro's paternal "grandfather" is Roberto, who was owned and
bred by the late John W. Galbreath, the former Pittsburgh Pirates
owner. Galbreath named Roberto in honor of the late Hall of Fame
