CLEVELAND -- Only Chris Duffy knows for sure why he didn't report to Triple-A Indianapolis this week, an action that caused the Pirates to place him on the restricted list.

His agent, Mike Nicotera, ruled out one of the theories Friday.

"This is not some sort of protest about being sent to the minors," Nicotera said yesterday afternoon.

Nicotera divulged little other information, citing Duffy's right to privacy.

It is known that Duffy, the Pirates' 26-year-old center fielder, has returned to his home in Glendale, Ariz. But neither Nicotera nor anyone in the Pirates organization could predict when Duffy might
