Tests by a federal lab next month could determine whether a
Westmoreland County company's mine seals will continue to be used in
coal mines.
The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration has changed the
minimum amount of pressure that a mine seal must withstand in an
explosion, and a product by New Kensington-based Burrell Mining Inc.
failed an initial test at that higher threshold.
The change comes in the wake of fatal explosions this year at the
Sago Mine in West Virginia and the Darby Mine in Kentucky in which
mine seals failed.
Investigators are checking the strength of the mine seals and
whether they were installed properly in the mines.
