Dear Dog Talk Readers: It's January of a New Year and a great time
to train a new dog or shape up the behavior of our old ones.
Periodically in the Dog Talk column, I'm going to teach you how to
train your dog to respond to basic obedience commands, such as "Sit,"
"Down," "Come," and "Stay" and use controlled walking on a leash.
These are the same commands that I teach my dogs and my clients'
dogs.
I believe that the formula for a well-trained dog is obedience
training, socialization and physical exercise. Obedience training is
a positive way to teach your dog that you are his pack leader.
Dogs have no inherent desire to please humans, just because we're
