BRADENTON, Fla. - Freddy Sanchez's knee is ready to start the
season, but his swing needs more time.
Saturday, the Pirates placed Sanchez on the 15-day disabled list,
backdated to March 23. He will miss the first four games -- perhaps
more -- of the regular season, which begins tomorrow in Houston
against the Astros.
"It's not so much the knee. I don't feel good at the plate,"
Sanchez said. "I don't feel like I'd be able to go in there in the
bottom of the ninth against (Astros reliever Brad) Lidge and have a
good, quality at-bat."
Sanchez sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee
March 6 while turning a double play.
