United Mine Workers union members could be on strike by Wednesday,
as union contracts at three mines operated by Foundation Coal,
including two in Pennsylvania, expired over the weekend. A work
stoppage would set the stage for the first major strike in U.S.
coalfields in 13 years. The miners' union plans to hold a solidarity
rally at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Greene County Fairgrounds outside
Waynesburg. The union authorized the strike at three Foundation Coal
mines last Tuesday, including the Cumberland Mine and Emerald Mine,
both in Greene County, and the Wabash Mine in Keensburg, Ill. The
