A new order in the NBA's Western Conference began with a taut
first game of the conference finals, with the Portland Trail Blazers
taking a 100-98 victory over the Phoenix Suns in front of a sellout
crowd of 12,884 at Memorial Coliseum.
Reserve guard Danny Young preserved the victory with a block of
Mike McGee's three-point try with less than 10 seconds left, after
Kevin Duckworth scored on a pass from guard Terry Porter with 17.3
seconds remaining.
"It was a called play for me and I knew Terry would penetrate,
and as soon as they came to him, he would pass it to me," Duckworth
said. "We ran that play a zillion times this year and we won some
games with it."
