Cesar Izturis started at shortstop Sunday, his first appearance
since arriving in a trade three days earlier. Pirates manager Jim
Tracy said he doesn't expect a lot of offense from Izturis, but said
there still is a lot of upside.
"He is a great defensive player," Tracy said. "He has instincts
and a sense of awareness that you can't teach."
* Matt Kata's double in the first inning gave the Pirates a
streak of 52 games with at least one extra-base hit.
* Going into yesterday's game, Freddy Sanchez had homered four
times in a span of 42 at-bats. He has five home runs, one shy of the
career high he set last season. Tracy said pitch selection is the
reason for Sanchez's power surge.
