PHILADELPHIA - John Van Benschoten got two huge outs in the first
inning Friday night against the Philadelphia Phillies.
For Van Benschoten, who was pitching for his job in the Pirates'
starting rotation, they were the two toughest, and most crucial, outs
he'd gotten all season.
All Van Benschoten needed to cap a dramatic turnaround and muzzle
a rowdy, near-sellout crowd at Citizens Bank Park was one more
strike.
That, he did not get.
Instead, Van Benschoten wound up allowing two runs in the first
inning and four more in the third. The Phillies went on to flatten
the Pirates, 8-1, in seven innings.
The game was called after a 61-minute rain delay.
