SAN DIEGO - It goes down as a loss, yet John Van Benschoten took a
step forward Monday night.
The Pirates right-hander turned in a solid start against the San
Diego Padres. However, rookie right-hander Jack Cassel was even
better, dominating the Pirates for six innings as the Padres cruised
to a 3-0 victory.
Making his second career start, Cassel (1-0) gave up eight hits,
seven of them singles, and got three strikeouts.
The Pirates' weak offense wasn't any help to Van Benschoten, who
is fighting to remain in the team's long-range plans. Last night was
his first start since a seven-run wipeout July 27 against
Philadelphia.
Van Benschoten, 27, started last night in place of Tony Armas. ...
