SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres are fighting for their third straight National League West title.

The stakes are higher for Pirates right-hander John Van Benschoten. He's got a career to worry about.

Monday, Van Benschoten made his first start since July 27. He was outdueled by rookie Jack Cassel, who dominated the Pirates for six innings and guided the Padres to a 3-0 victory.

Making his second career start, Cassel (1-0) gave up eight hits, seven of them singles, and got three strikeouts. The win moved San Diego within one game of NL West leader Arizona.
