Tony Thompson is learning the hard way one of the cardinal rules
of professional boxing: The higher a dangerous fighter with slim
market appeal climbs in the rankings, the longer he waits for a big
bout.
When World Boxing Organization heavyweight champion Sultan
Ibragimov signed yesterday to fight Feb. 23 at New York's Madison
Square Garden, the No. 1-ranked Thompson of Fort Washington was not
the named opponent.
Instead, Ibragimov will fight a title unification bout with IBF
champion Wladimir Klitschko.
In October, the Russian Ibragimov also passed on facing Thompson,
opting for a relatively easy, more lucrative match against 45-year-
old former champ Evander Holyfield.
