There's more than one way to savour a strawberry, writes Kate
Fraser.
I have been too hasty this strawberry season. I looked the other
way when I saw those September berries because I knew they would be
pretty on the outside but hard and flavourless beneath that scarlet,
grown-in-Queensland coat.
Then, early this month, Auckland and Waikato strawberries arrived
in town and I said, "These will be good, they're ours."
Yeah right! The sweetness I look forward to from one November to
the next was so not there I might have been eating tomatoes.
No complaints about size; some serious fertilisation must have
been injected into this year's early crop because these berries were
huge. And wooden. ...
