WEST MILTON -- As a boy growing up on a farm near Richmond, Ind., William R. "Bill" Morris was determined to work in public safety.

At 21 in 1951, he started working for the Union police and fire departments.

The job required him to use his own car -- with a magnetic POLICE sign attached -- and buy his own flashing red light for the top, but he didn't mind.

Along the way, he worked eight years with the West Milton police, before landing his dream job as a fulltime deputy with the Miami County Sheriff's Department in 1968.
