The American TV, appliance and furniture store in Brown Deer
handed out free $25 gift cards to more than 200 customers who waited
an extra hour in the sub-freezing cold at the crack of dawn Friday.
Although the retailer was advertised to open at 5 a.m. - the same
as each of the 15 American outlets in the Madison-based retail chain
- local police arrived at the Brown Deer store at 4:30 a.m. and told
the manager that city ordinance prohibits stores from opening before
6 a.m., said the store's general manager, Quinn O'Day.
"I gave out more than 200 $25 gift cards to the people waiting
because of the inconvenience," said O'Day, whose store is at 6700 W.
