The Web site for the developer of Leisure World of Virginia -- a gated, 91-acre Lansdowne community for age 55 and older -- touts "sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Foothills, Sugar Loaf Mountain and the [Potomac] river" as one of the ritzy development's main selling points.

For many residents of Leisure World's Riverbend building, that pitch is all too familiar. They, too, were promised a river view when they bought their condominiums, they say. But their vista is now threatened by the developer's plans to build a high-rise across the street, and the residents say they are prepared to do whatever it takes to stop the project.
