Article: Pleasanton schools call in milk substitute

Melissa Ott used to think it would be OK to have milk as long as her mom didn't know.

But with or without her mom's knowledge, milk from cows gives the sophomore at Pleasanton's Amador Valley High problems, including stomach aches, a stuffy nose and a lowered immunity making her susceptible to illness.

That's why she's happy that her school district this year joined a small but growing number of districts offering soy milk as an alternative.

"I hope they start having more," said Ott, who is allergic to dairy products.
