I remember a summer day more than 20 years ago when I spotted Joe
Gross and Eric Smith - two longtime friends who would eventually
share 30 years at The Capital - walking down Main Street in
Annapolis.
That they had lunch together that day was not uncommon. But, even
for the odd couple, it seemed a bit odd to see them standing over a
manhole cover near the entrance to the Hillman garage.
Eric was lowering himself through the manhole as Joe stood guard.
I couldn't imagine what on earth would draw Eric into a city sewer.
Was he researching a column about what filth lurks beneath the city
streets? Was he rescuing a duckling in distress?
