The West Virginia Attorney General's Office has decided not to
give an opinion on whether hate-crime laws could be applied against
six Logan County residents accused of raping, beating and torturing
Megan Williams in September.
Logan County Prosecutor Brian Abraham said the response came in a
"half-assed letter" from Attorney General Darrell McGraw's office,
and said the Attorney General's Office was staying out of the case
for political reasons.
Fran Hughes, chief deputy attorney general, denied that and said
Abraham was trying to avoid making a tough political decision.
