French PM says police officers not social workers

PARIS, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- French Prime Minister Francois FillonMonday said the public should not confuse police officers with social workers, according to reliable sources.

The officers are there "to ensure that there is order" and not "to give social assistance," said the prime minister, who was speaking from Saint-Etienne only a week since the eruption of violent clashes between police officers and young people in Villiers- le-Bel northwestern Paris suburbs.
