Article: Magazine retracts MU grad's essays ; New Republic can't confirm war stories.

After 41/2 months of investigation, The New Republic has retracted three essays about the Iraq war written by former University of Missouri student Scott Beauchamp.

"In light of the evidence available to us, after months of intensive re-reporting, we cannot be confident that the events in his pieces occurred in exactly the manner that he described them," editor Frank Foer wrote in a column released over the weekend. "Without that essential confidence, we cannot stand by these stories."

Foer did not go so far as to say Beauchamp fabricated the essays.
