There was the formation of an anti-doping agency, the first of
its kind in the U.S., where most Olympic athletes hadn't been drug-
tested and those who had been caught were slapped on the wrist. Then
there was the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative (BALCO)
investigation, in which more than a dozen U.S. track and field
athletes were sanctioned and the designer steroid THG was unmasked.
