Police accused of incompetence and hiding 'timebomb' evidence

POLICE heading the failed race-fixing inquiry were accused in
court of incompetence, abusing their powers and misleading the
court.
Detectives came under attack for "burying" evidence and
compromising their own integrity.
In addition, they asked the British Horseracing Authority to
contribute to the cost of the inquiry and a senior officer was
accused of losing impartiality by applying for a job at the BHA as
the trial opened.
But the case was ultimately lost by the detectives' decision
taken with Crown lawyers to call in as an expert witness senior
Australian steward Ray Murrihy, who had no knowledge of British
racing.
