State officials plan to test soil along the banks of the Neponset
River this month for possible contamination by PCBs, a toxic residue
of industries once located along the waterway.
Among the areas to be tested is the 2.4-mile Lower Neponset River
Trail, a popular biking and walking trail that follows the path of a
former railroad bed along the river between Milton and Boston.
The state will be testing soil that was dredged from the river
during the 1960s and deposited along the shoreline. Evidence of PCB
contamination of river sediment has been gathered over the years by
