State officials plan to test soil along the banks of the Neponset River this month for possible contamination by PCBs, a toxic residue of industries once located along the waterway.

Among the areas to be tested is the 2.4-mile Lower Neponset River Trail, a popular biking and walking trail that follows the path of a former railroad bed along the river between Milton and Boston.

The state will be testing soil that was dredged from the river during the 1960s and deposited along the shoreline.
