Article: Donkey charity sets up refuge in northern Italy

A donkey charity has expanded its work in a bid to prevent hundreds of animals from being turned into salami.

The Donkey Sanctuary, based in Sidmouth, Devon, recently finished building a new rescue centre in the Turin region of Italy to stop unwanted donkeys being sold to meat markets.

A group of 15 rescued donkeys arrived at the Il Rifugio Degli Assineli last week and the charity hopes they will be the first of hundreds.
