Specific targets for developed countries cutting emissions
remained in the roadmap for a new international climate change deal
yesterday, despite the US's unwillingness to see them included in
the document.
An initial draft of the text which will lay out the route towards
reaching an agreement in 2009 said the deal would work on the basis
of scientific calls for 25% to 40% cuts on 1990 levels by 2020.
But the US delegation said having specific figures in the draft
drawn up at the UN conference in Bali could prejudge the outcome of
negotiations to achieve a final deal in two years.
Lead negotiator Harlan Watson: "I don't think it is prudent or
reasonable to start off with some set of numbers ...
