Use extra care when preparing homemade baby food

Baby food doesn't have to come in a jar. You can easily make your own to provide low-cost, nutritious foods for your child.

Most babies do not need solid foods until they are 4 to 6 months old. Before then, most have not learned to swallow solid foods. The sucking reflex pushes the tongue forward in the mouth and pushes out solid foods. Starting solids too soon may contribute to gagging and choking.

Baby food is strained, pureed or mashed. Foods can be softened or mashed in a blender, food processor, food mill or grinder. Scrub fruits and vegetables extra well under running water with a vegetable brush. Trim stringy parts and remove pits, peels and seeds that could cause choking.
