New Mexico Travel Bruised Hotels Blame Gas For Cancellations

Reports of New Mexicans and would-be visitors changing their Labor Day weekend travel plans mounted on Friday as $3-plus gasoline spread across the country.

Hospitality industry groups said they were receiving cancellations and estimated that reservations for rooms and meetings at hotels and motels in several New Mexico cities were down as much as 10 percent for the holiday weekend.

The statewide average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline jumped nearly 23 cents in a week to hit $2.89 on Friday. That's the biggest weekly increase ever, said AAA New Mexico spokeswoman Jeannie Chavez.
