Sen. Pete Domenici and New Mexico's Environment Department are
butting heads over how the state is enforcing a new federal standard
for arsenic in drinking water.
Domenici, R-N.M., has written several letters to Gov. Bill
Richardson, asking him to make life easier for small water systems
struggling to get time extensions to meet the standard.
"The NMED compliance and (extension) requirements are onerous and
excessive, and I continue to believe more must be done to help our
small communities," Domenici wrote last week.
Richardson is leaving the issue to Environment Secretary Ron
Curry, who says his agency is going beyond federal guidelines to be
flexible and working closely with small ...
