Internet Crime On Rise In N.M. Technology Boom May Be To Blame

The sons of Nigerian royalty, eBay scam artists and pedophiles are finding fertile ground in New Mexico.

Over the past two years, Internet crime in the state increased by more than 235 percent, while nationwide it has stayed the same, according to reports released recently by the federal Internet Crime Complaint Center.

In 2004, New Mexico had 376 complaints, placing it lowest in the nation in the number of complaints per capita. This year, the state ranked 17th with 1,263 complaints, the center said.

Local law enforcement attributes the increase to a greater public awareness of Internet crimes, more access to broadband Internet and a rural landscape that encourages people to shop online.
