If there is a genre of plant that sums up and clarifies the
importance of planning ahead, it is the spring-flowering bulb - the
bulb that must be planted in the fall so it will bloom the next
spring. And if there is one spring-flowering bulb that stands for
all the others as an examplar, a logo, even an icon, it is the
tulip.
Discovered by the Ottoman Turks, who were impressed by its
gracefulness and symmetry, and catapulted into world fame by the
Dutch, who became passionate about the blending of petal colors, the
tulip sets the standards against which other spring-flowering bulbs
