Open for winter Water gardens flow despite the weather

BLOOMINGTON - Homeowners spend a lot of time hunkering down for winter.

There are ladders to climb and storm windows to mount. Water pipes under mobile homes need wrapping and rose bushes won't survive unless they're covered with a blanket of mulch or a cardboard cone.

Water gardens don't need covering. They thrive very nicely no matter what winter throws at them.

However, they do need a good fall cleaning and hearty plants need to be placed below the frost line. Tender plants need to be brought indoors.

Start winterizing water gardens after the first frost when the water temperature drops to about 50 degrees, said Mitch Cogswell, co- owner of Timber Creek Design in Bloomington.
