Article: Mahomet may move to municipal court system

MAHOMET - The rapidly growing village of Mahomet is looking at taking a big-city approach to law enforcement by making misdemeanors ordinance violations under a proposal municipal-court system.

Instead of referring all misdemeanors to the Champaign County Circuit Court, Mahomet police would issue ordinance-violation citations for offenders to appear in municipal court. Offenders could plead guilty and pay a local fine instead of going to county court.

Such a municipal court, which could be adopted by April, would save village and county law enforcement agencies time and money, increase deterrence and keep fine money in village coffers, Village Administrator Teri Legner said.
