Article: East Coast Hockey League changes name

PEORIA - The Class AA hockey league the Peoria Rivermen have belonged to since 1995 announced a formal name change to media members Monday.

The league, known since its beginning in 1989 as the East Coast Hockey League, is dropping any reference to geographic designation, and will simply be known as the ECHL, explained Brian McKenna, president and CEO. McKenna said the league will market itself by using the ECHL acronym, followed by the phrase, "America's Premier AA Hockey League."
