Article: Legion wants Normal memorial

NORMAL -- An American Legion veterans' memorial could come to Normal, but the type and location are a point of debate between legion members and the city council.

The more than 400 members of Post 635 want a combination of surplus military equipment, such as a tank and a couple of artillery pieces, and a memorial plaque.

City council members don't oppose a memorial, but some are concerned about including equipment.

Councilwoman Cheryl Gaines suggests that including military hardware would take away the reverence fitting for a memorial.

"Does the hardware bring more reverence to what (the veterans) did or does it tend to give the message of glorifying war?" Gaines asked at Monday's council ...
