Tom Bell, 57, a longtime spokesman for the Arlington police who
moonlighted as a radio oldies deejay and helped introduce the
character of McGruff the Crime Dog locally, died April 25 of leukemia
at Georgetown University Hospital.
After working in broadcasting early in his career in Norfolk, Mr.
Bell moved to Northern Virginia in 1972 as program director for WEAM,
then a Washington rock station. While working as a disc jockey at a
private dance in 1973, he found himself talking with an Arlington
police officer and decided to enter the police academy.
Mr. Bell spent six years with Arlington County police as a
