State cracks down on plant trespassing

PONTIAC The state is cracking down on trespassers to the old Smith-Douglass fertilizer plant property because of health and safety reasons.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has reminded Livingston County officials that no one is allowed at the sealed, hazardous waste site in South Streator without an escort.

A letter sent last month said escorts are required for everyone, including independent researchers.

"We told two local officials if they did want to visit the site, they would need to be escorted by someone from the Illinois EPA," said department spokesman Maggie Carson. "Anybody doing any work on the site would have to have 40 hours of safety training."
