Quick. Name the fastest growing agricultural segment in Illinois.
It's not anything as commonplace as corn or soybeans. And it's
certainly nothing exotic like llamas or ostriches.
Time's up. It's the green industry -- the catchall for everything
ranging from lawn care and gardening to Christmas tree farms.
According to a new Illinois survey, the industry grew 20 percent
from 1999 to 2003. University of Illinois researchers turned a
$44,000 AgriFIRST state grant into the survey of businesses,
agencies, institutions and others who produce, maintain, use or sell
plant materials.
The Illinois Green Industry Economic Impact Survey revealed a $4
billion industry comprised of more than 9,000 ...
