Article: Streator cuts property tax levy, raises garbage fee

STREATOR -- The City Council cut the property tax levy increase by more than half Wednesday night, but the garbage collection rate more than doubled.

The council had adopted in December a $2.1 million property tax levy for 2004 taxes payable in 2005. That was 31 percent higher than the previous year.

On Wednesday, the council scaled the levy growth back to 12.5 percent.

The new garbage rates, which went up from $5.55 a month per household to $13.35, and higher property values helped cut the levy increase, City Manager John Kolata said.
